Twinning schools bring AI and imagination together this Easter

Norwood Primary School and Iphutheng Primary School learners combined Easter fun with futuristic flair, using AI to imagine, create, and bake hot cross buns.

An enchanting blend of innovation, imagination, and Easter magic unfolded at Norwood Primary School on April 11, as learners from their twinning school, Iphutheng Primary School, gathered for a heartwarming event titled: Baking, Shaping, and Making with Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The interactive learning experience was more than just flour-dusted aprons and sticky fingers; it was a unique fusion of technology and hands-on creativity that had the learners utterly enthralled.

Collectively dubbed ThengWood, the Norwood and Iphutheng learners have been swept up in a wave of AI fascination, their curiosity sparking bold ideas and vibrant expressions of imagination. The Easter-themed activity was the latest in a series of collaborative adventures, but this time, it came with a special twist – parents were invited to join in on the fun.

With flour in one hand and technology in the other, each child selected ingredients and fed them into an AI programme, which then magically generated a personalised hot cross bun recipe. From chocolate-chip chilli buns, to marshmallow mint marvels, no idea was too wild. The AI took the children’s wildest dreams and turned them into whimsical, edible reality.

But the creativity didn’t stop there. The learners challenged the AI to design hot cross buns that danced on the edge of the imaginable – buns shaped like bunnies wearing sunglasses, or designed to resemble robots in bow ties. What they couldn’t draw by hand, AI brought to life with flair, proving that tech can be both tool and muse.

In order to bring their digital designs into the physical world, the children proudly rolled, shaped, and baked their imaginative creations, filling the school with the mouth-watering scent of innovation and cinnamon.

The fun continued at the make-believe shop, where the freshly baked buns were sold – with all proceeds going into a seed fund aimed at supporting future creative projects for the learners.

“The twinning programme is very important to me,” said Afrika Hlongwane, Norwood Primary School principal. “ThengWood isn’t just about shared learning; it’s about shared dreams. We’re committed to nurturing the talents of both school communities and giving our children the best possible opportunities to grow.”

As the aroma of freshly baked buns filled the air, and laughter echoed through the corridors, the event stood as a testament to the power of partnership, creativity, and innovation. Through the twinning programme, Norwood and Iphutheng Primary Schools continue to break new ground – proving that when young minds are given the tools to dream big, there’s no limit to what they can create.
