Local NPO Paws 4 U promotes empathy and care through therapy dog visits

Paws 4 U’s therapy dogs bring comfort, joy, and emotional support across Gauteng, showing how the bond between humans and animals can truly change lives.

The Parkhurst Fair was filled with laughter and wagging tails as Paws 4 U, a local non-profit organisation, introduced visitors to their therapy dogs.

Crowds gathered to meet the calm, affectionate dogs and learn how these specially trained animals bring comfort and connection to people in hospitals, care centres, schools, and retirement homes across Gauteng.

Paws4U, short for People and Wonderful Souls, continues the work started by Paws for People Therapy Dogs, founded in 1997 by Lesley de Klerk. Led by Eileen Calvert, the organisation has grown into a network of dedicated handlers and therapy dogs who use their presence to create moments of calm, joy, and emotional support for those in need.

Each dog and handler team is carefully evaluated and trained. Dogs must be friendly, gentle, and at ease with people and other animals, while handlers learn to read their dog’s cues and provide safe, meaningful interactions.

Beyond therapy visits, Paws 4 U promotes empathy, responsible pet interaction, and bite prevention, particularly among children.

What sets Paws 4 U apart is its commitment to combining care, training, and education. Their programmes are designed to teach respect for animals while improving the well-being of those they visit.

The organisation also ensures all dogs are healthy, clean, and certified for therapy work, giving families and facilities confidence in every visit.

Through years of dedication, Paws 4 U has shown that the bond between humans and animals can have a profound impact. Their therapy dogs provide comfort, acceptance, and emotional connection, proving that a gentle paw and a wagging tail can truly change lives.
