Anna Fee is a participant of the Youth for Understanding (YFU) high school exchange programme, one of the world’s largest and oldest non-profit youth exchange organisations.

There’s a new face among the girls at Parktown Girls High School, and her name is Anna Fee.

She’s an exchange student from Germany, who will be in Grade 10 until June next year.

Anna (16), from Hamburg, Germany, said, “I really like Hamburg. It is a big and beautiful city. I love to travel and to discover new things, and in my free time, I often meet up with friends.”

Every year, YFU South Africa welcomes learners from across the world, places them in local host families and schools, and accompanies them through their intercultural learning journey.

“I wanted to do an exchange year because both my father and my brother had this experience in the USA,” Anna explained. “I wanted something different, so I decided to come to Africa.”

Anna hopes to learn more about South Africa’s diverse cultures, and have different experiences which will hopefully stay with her. “At the same time, I am excited to share more about Germany.

Sometimes I feel that many people see Germany, mostly, in a negative way, because of its past, but Germany is a beautiful country, with a long history and rich culture.”
