Will your vote still count in 2026?

Ward 117 boundaries are being redrawn ahead of next year’s local government elections, and some Rosebank residents could wake up in a completely different ward.

Residents of Rosebank, Saxonwold, Parkwood, and parts of Dunkeld West are no strangers to change, but the redrawing of Ward 117 boundaries by the Municipal Demarcation Board could be one of the most significant shifts the area faces before the 2026 local government elections.

The independent board is finalising new ward lines across Johannesburg to ensure each ward has a similar number of registered voters, taking into account population growth and the wave of new residential developments. Draft maps released in November indicate that several sections of Rosebank may be moved out of Ward 117 and placed into neighboring wards such as 73, 87, or 90.

Areas around The Mall of Rosebank and parts of Bath Avenue could fall into Ward 73, which currently covers Illovo and Melrose. Some properties north of Oxford Road, including portions of Saxonwold, may be transferred to Ward 90, while newer apartment blocks along Tyrwhitt Avenue are also under consideration for reassignment.

The final boundary map is expected to be officially gazetted by February 2026, leaving residents only a short window to confirm, and, if necessary, update their voter registration details.

A move to another ward means a different councillor will represent the area at City Hall, potentially changing the focus on local issues, such as security patrols, water supply, road maintenance, and development around the mall precinct. With Rosebank’s rate base expanding rapidly, thanks to new luxury complexes being built, the suburb’s priorities could be diluted if it is split across multiple wards.

Residents can check whether their address will be affected in several easy ways. From December 15, the Municipal Demarcation Board’s online ward lookup tool will be active at www.demarcation.org.za. Alternatively, sending an SMS with your ID number to 32810 will return both your current and proposed ward. Electoral staff will also be available at the Rosebank Library on Saturdays throughout January to assist in person.

If the proposed changes are unacceptable, the public has until February 28, 2026 to lodge formal objections. These can be emailed to objections@demarcation.org.za or handed in during public hearings scheduled for February 22 and 23 at Marks Park Sports Club.

With the economic importance of Rosebank continuing to grow, the outcome of this redemarcation process will play a big role in how effectively the suburb’s voice is heard in the next council term.

Make sure you check your status soon, so that Rosebank remains strongly represented when voters head to the polls in 2026.
