Nearly 200 babies born at Gauteng public health facilities on New Year’s Day
Public hospitals and clinics across the province recorded a steady number of births as the year began, with academic hospitals among those welcoming newborns.
Gauteng’s public health facilities recorded 196 births by midday on New Year’s Day, according to the Gauteng Department of Health.
The newborns included 90 boys and 106 girls, among them two sets of twins. The province’s four academic hospitals delivered a total of 38 babies. These include Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

Tertiary hospitals accounted for 22 births, while regional and district hospitals recorded 100 deliveries. Community health centres contributed a further 36 births.’

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko visited health facilities on New Year’s Day, where she presented mothers with gift hampers and engaged with parents on the importance of registering newborns with the Department of Home Affairs.

She also emphasised the need for timely immunisation and breastfeeding to protect babies from preventable diseases and support healthy development.
