Parkhurst lights back on after cable theft plunges suburb into darkness

Electricity supply to Parkhurst was restored on January 3 after cable theft caused a prolonged outage over the New Year period.

The electricity supply to Parkhurst was restored on January 3, following a power outage caused by cable theft, City Power has confirmed.

According to City Power’s Hursthill Service Delivery Centre (SDC), customers supplied by the Parkhurst substation and distributor were affected by the outage. The utility said the power interruption was caused by a cable fault.

“We are pleased to announce that power supply has been fully restored to customers in Parkhurst and possible surrounding areas,” City Power said. “We appreciate your time and patience.”

Residents raised concerns during the outage, particularly as some properties remained without electricity on New Year’s Day.

In a post on the Parkhurst Residents and Business Owners Association (PRABOA) Facebook page on January 1, the association said a resident was on site with City Power to determine the cause of the continued power interruption.

“It seems it is a cable fault. It has been prioritised and PRABOA will also escalate it,” the association said.

City Power advised customers experiencing isolated electricity faults or other power-related issues to log calls via citypower.mobi or contact the call centre on 011 490 7484 or 0800 202 925.

The utility also urged residents to report cable theft and vandalism. Cable theft can be reported anonymously to City Power’s Risk Control unit on 0800 002 587, directly on 011 490 7900 or 011 490 7911, or via WhatsApp on 083 579 4497.

Active incidents should also be reported to the South African Police Service.
