7 distinctions propel St Teresa’s top achiever towards a future in chemical engineering

Jennifer Sweeney is set to study chemical engineering at the University of Pretoria after achieving 7 distinctions and top 1% placement in the 2025 matric exams.

For Jennifer Sweeney, matric was never just about marks; it was about learning how to grow under pressure.

That mindset paid off in a big way, with the St Teresa’s learner finishing as the school’s top academic achiever for the Class of 2025, earning seven distinctions, and placing in the top 1% nationally for accounting and life orientation.

Rather than relying on last-minute cramming, Jennifer approached the year with structure and balance. She believes her success was built on three pillars: Strong support from those around her, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and taking responsibility for her own progress. “Knowing I could learn from my mistakes made a huge difference. If something didn’t go as planned, I used it as a chance to improve.”

Like most matric pupils, she faced her fair share of distractions, from milestone birthdays to the lure of a break during exams. Procrastination sometimes crept in too, often disguised as baking or organising her room, but staying focused on her goals helped her regain direction when her attention wandered.

To manage academic pressure, Jennifer broke large tasks into smaller, manageable steps, dealing with deadlines as they arose.

Sport remained an important part of her routine, offering both a mental break and an opportunity to connect with friends. “Sport was my reset. It helped me come back to my work feeling refreshed.”

Throughout the year, her family, friends, and teachers provided constant encouragement. Their belief in her abilities, especially during stressful moments, strengthened her confidence and kept her motivated.

Jennifer encourages future matric pupils to prepare early and work consistently. Using past exam papers, she says, helped her identify areas needing extra attention, while also building confidence for the exam environment.

With school now behind her, Jennifer is setting her sights on studying chemical engineering at the University of Pretoria.

Reflecting on her matric journey, she says the experience taught her valuable lessons about time management, resilience, and asking for help when it was needed.

It is an approach that not only led to exceptional results, but one she hopes to carry forward into the next chapter of her academic journey.
