Zoo Lake swimmers left high and dry as chemical shortages halt swimming

A shortage of essential pool chemicals has temporarily suspended swimming at Zoo Lake, prompting a community fundraising effort to help keep the facility operational.

Residents hoping to take a dip at the Zoo Lake swimming pool are currently unable to do so, as a shortage of essential pool chemicals has forced a temporary halt to swimming activities

According to the City of Johannesburg, the service disruptions are the result of constraints in the supply of essential pool chemicals. These chemicals are mandatory for maintaining compliant water quality standards and ensuring the health and safety of residents.

MMC for Community Development Thapelo Amad acknowledged the inconvenience caused, and confirmed that the city is currently prioritising its available stock for high-demand regional facilities, while maintaining strict water quality monitoring protocols at all operational sites. “These temporary closures are necessary to ensure that public safety is not compromised. Further updates regarding the reopening of facilities will be communicated through official city channels.”

Tessa Abrahamovitz, from FOZLP, said the organisations are working in collaboration with the city’s sports and recreation department, contributing towards the general maintenance and operations of the pool. “We are fundraising together with the Zoo Lake Water Polo Club to buy chemicals to keep the pool open.”
