Norwood residents unite to support growing clean-up movement
A lockdown clean-up effort has grown into a community-driven movement changing lives and reshaping the streets of Norwood.
The founder of Spiritual Chords, Safeeyah Moosa, began her work in Norwood after noticing deteriorating conditions along Grant Avenue and Frances Road.
“It was very untidy, there was a lot of human waste,” she said. With limited support, she and a small team took matters into their own hands, cleaning pavements and restoring neglected public spaces.
What began as a response to immediate need soon evolved into something far more impactful.

Moosa explains that her mission was simple: “If everybody looks after their own space, we have a beautiful world.” Rather than waiting for authorities or others to act, she chose to lead by example, a decision that slowly inspired change within the community.
Local businesses and residents began to take notice. Some contributed funding, while others offered hands-on support.
The initiative now works closely with the Norwood Grime Fighters, Norwood Business Association and the Norwood Orchards Residents Association, strengthening its reach and sustainability.
Beyond cleaning, the project focuses on uplifting people. Homeless and unemployed individuals have been employed to maintain the area, giving them both income and purpose.
“Two of them were sleeping in the park; now they’re earning and renting a space,” said Moosa. One participant has even overcome alcohol dependency, while another has been trained in computer literacy and now teaches others.

Despite challenges, including resistance from some park dwellers and the need for more resources, Moosa remains committed. “We’re not going to waver; we show love no matter what.”
The initiative runs daily and continues to expand, with plans for broader community involvement and regular clean-up events.
At its core, the project is about more than tidying streets. It is about restoring dignity, building bridges across communities and proving that meaningful change can begin with the simplest act.
“It’s one life at a time. That’s really what we’re doing.”
