Sailing glory for Grade 9 Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg learner

Sebastian Marschall began sailing two years ago, and now he’s winning regattas, along with his teammates from DSJ.

Sebastian Marschall recently competed at the interschool Dinghy Regatta, held at Victoria Lake.

The Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ) Grade 9 learner did not think he’d win sailing accolades two years after joining the sport. He explained that he ventured into the sport because his parents wanted him to go out more often. “I also wanted to try something new, that not many peers have done before.”

Facing strong competition from nine other school teams at the regatta, DSJ sailors demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork, and determination, earning them 1st place in both the senior and junior fleet divisions. The Grade 9 learner noted that the sport has taught him how to focus, race tactics, boat handling, independence, confidence, and staying calm under pressure.

He also added that he practices once a week. “Which leaves plenty of time for school, other extramural activities that I do, and studying for exams.”

Sebastian said his experience at the regatta was fun, because it was his first regatta after joining a new boat class. “I learnt a lot about my new boat and I had fun competing with my friends.”

He highlighted that the school securing first place in both divisions was what he hoped for. “We trained tirelessly for the event and our school consists of good sailors. All of us trained for multiple weeks, and I believe that we are deserving of the win.”

The sailor concluded that he’s looking forward to the upcoming Victoria Lake Club Winter Challenge in May and the North West Youth Provincials in August.
