‘Soon we’ll all drive like taxis’

Fed-up motorist writes:

On 27 February we were travelling along Jan Smuts Avenue during peak hour traffic at around 4.30pm.

A taxi with the registration NXN902GP tried his best to push us off the road by insisting he be allowed to cut in in front of us.

Jan Smuts is a narrow road which barely accommodating the two-lane driving in one direction, but this taxi driver had to have his way.

He stormed in front of us hitting our windscreen with his hand.

I am quite sure that many people on a daily basis suffer this sort of taxi bullying.

If there was just one police officer at the intersection of Bompas and Jan Smuts issuing fines to taxis committing death defying acts, traffic would flow better and it would be safer.

Taxi drivers are the ones who should be extra careful, simply because they are carrying several passengers whose lives are in their hands.

But instead, on a daily basis, many times a day, taxi drivers show an absolute and blatant disregard for the rules of the road.

I am sure that if those guilty of reckless driving and of disregarding the rules of the road – as well as obviously endangering the lives of their passengers – were held accountable every time they committed an offence, then we would not have this lawlessness on our roads.

But instead, not enough people complain and the police do not care to prosecute offenders, so it is inevitable that sooner or later everyone will drive like a taxi.
