Two weeks ago, I went on a bit of a clean-up around Greenside’s streets.
Cleaning just one block, between Clovelly and Barry Hertzog roads (on the Checkers side) and Greenhill and Troon roads.
I regularly walk around Greenside and have noticed how, slowly but surely, the amount of litter lying around in our streets has grown.
At first it was just the entrance roads into our suburb, but now it is difficult to walk 50m without seeing empty food packets, pieces of plastic and paper lying about.
My clean-up initiative was more of an experiment: I wanted to see whether I wasn’t making something out of nothing.
I picked up the equivalent of half a Pikitup recycling bag in just this one block.
Unfortunately for us as residents (and businesses) of Greenside, Pikitup does not have the capacity to clean up our pavements every day.
If we want to see a difference it will be up to each one of us; it is no inconvenience to clean up the litter from the street in front of your house every day, even if someone else has created the mess.
Then perhaps go a step further and clean up in front of your neighbours’ houses every day, or get your kids or gardener to do it.
In so doing you teach your kids and staff about not littering and while you are at it, support Pikitup’s recycling programme by starting to recycle your and others’ rubbish.
Is this too much to ask? Not if we want to see a difference in Greenside.
