Soccer development at Old Parks to take off

BORDEAUX – Soccer development is a key focus area for the Old Parktonian Sports Club as they aim to surpass the successes of the past year.

Soccer registration at the Old Parktonian Sports Club will soon be open, with U6 to U17 boys and U6 to U35 girls and senior women invited to swap their school uniforms and work suits for soccer boots.

Once enrolled, players from all levels have an opportunity to participate in an active and healthy lifestyle while attending scheduled training sessions and matches, according to the club’s director of coaching, Gary Roodt.

“Development at Old Parks FC refers not only to the development of a soccer player but also of an individual – teaching both soccer and life skills,” said Roodt.

“At Old Parks, in line with our coaching syllabus, we ensure that as players mature the development process continues – ultimately producing more skilful players who have a sound technique.”

Roodt added that last year was particularly successful, adding that one player, in particular, had raised the club’s profile after she was selected to represent the U17 national team. Despite being selected, Sarah Walker (15) was dropped a day before the team’s match against Botswana.

“Our plans were to get most of our players to represent the district sides and that we achieved through our junior sides and also had our junior girl called up to the national U17 team to represent South Africa at the World Cup qualifiers,” explained Roodt. “Although she didn’t make the team, the club was proud of her and her achievement thus far. So all in all, we had a successful year in 2017 and looking forward to achieving more this year.

“This year we are working towards getting all our age groups to have the professional skills training, player central training, soccer IQ and skills performance development, and life skills to help them [in terms of how] to conduct themselves on and off the field. We’re also hoping to attract 100 plus new soccer members this year.”
