Jeppe Black is on track
KENSINGTON – Local girls' cricket team holds their own against older opponents.
Jeppe Black rounded off its campaign in the Gauteng Cricket Board Women’s League with another confidence-boosting performance against an older team.
The side, which is mostly made up of schoolgirls and is based at Jeppe High School for Boys, Kensington, is one of two Jeppe girls’ teams that plays in the league. The other is Jeppe Gold.

The scorecard might have recorded a 62-run loss against Wanderers Cricket Club on an overcast 17 March, but the match was closer than the score suggested.
Wanderers, who had won the toss and selected to bat first, were held to 171–6 in their 35 overs, even though a mistake regarding over allocation meant the final overs were not bowled by Jeppe Black’s best bowlers.

However, the Wanderers’ experienced bowlers were able to keep Jeppe Black under pressure throughout their innings and restricted them to 109–5 in their 35 overs.

“Both teams showed fantastic spirit during the match and the Wanderers ladies complimented my girls on their ability and maturity,” said Jeppe Black team manager, Graham Cuerden.
Team captain Alysia Rudolph said the scintillating game rounded off a successful league that saw the team finish fifth (out of 10 teams) thanks to four wins, three losses and two no results.

To finish mid-table is impressive for one of the youngest teams in the league.
“We are a young and energetic team, always keen for everything coming our way,” Rudolph said.
She explained that optimism was key this season.
“The girls give their all in every match and at every practice. They always keep their heads up high no matter what the results and play for each other.”
