Youngsters encouraged to bowl at Pirates

Pirates Bowls hopes to install floodlights on one of their greens in the next 12 months.

Pirates Bowls members enjoyed the autumn sun in Greenside as they perfected their delivery strides on April 13.

The chairperson of the Pirates Bowls section Steve Hollis said, “Pirates Club was voted the best sports club in Johannesburg for 2023 and the bowls section is proud to be part of it.”

The club is one of the oldest in Gauteng and caters for bowls, rugby, road running, cricket, tennis, football, padel and squash.
Many sections run junior teams which encourage boys and girls to take up sports.

Pirates Bowls section has introduced a social bowls morning every Saturday from 9.30 which hopes to introduce the sport to the age groups of 16 to 60+.

Hollis added, “Recently my wife was knocked out of a competition by a junior Springbok and a young provincial player both aged 23. Bowls is commonly thought of as an older person’s activity, which is a perception we would like to change.”

“We are very keen to increase our membership base and have more representation in the local leagues run by the Johannesburg Bowls Association.”

Everyone is welcome to join and new members will be provided with bowls and instruction for R30 per person for two hours of fun, an affordable cost compared to many other sports.

There is also a cafĂ© that serves breakfast and lunch at very reasonable prices and a children’s play area that is safe and welcoming.
