St Johns cyclist rides to the top
HOUGHTON - Ex St Johns College pupil Chris Froome is set for higher peaks as he pursues his career as a professional cyclist.

He initially started mountain biking whilst living in Kenya. However, his interest in road cycling developed after joining St Johns in 1999 where he joined the schools Cycling Club. The bug bit and he started saving for his first road bike.
Although cycling wasn’t a school sport, he still found time to do early morning rides before school and would ride on rollers most evenings.
Froome participated in other school sports such as rugby and running, winning an inter-house cross country athletics event. His passion however was cycling.
One of his favourite climbs that he often used for training was on Munro Drive, adjacent to St Johns College, which Froome said, “Now it looks like a speed hump compared to the mountain passes that I now use to prepare for events like the Tour de France.”
