Topstars glitter in competition
ORDINARY supermarket workers performed like world-class superstars at the Shoprite Topstars competition at Montecasino.
Topstars is a corporate worker project that the Shoprite group created to empower individuals through the magic of singing. The Shoprite Group of Companies operates in 16 different African countries with workers totalling over 114 000.
Topstars annually receives entries in the form of audition tapes from most of their stores. This year Topstars released an album called Topstars All Stars which is a compilation of songs by all the previous winners of the Topstars competition. The winners have also released a single called Afrikan Party.
The Gauteng semi-finals of the competition were held at Montecasino where 11 semi-finalists from Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the North West province were given the opportunity to perform for their co-workers and the judges, who ultimately make the final decision of who to put through to the South African Topstars finals in Cape Town.
Fourways had their very own star in the form of Checkers Hyper floor manager, Frans van Rensburg who gave a knock-out rendition of Evergreen and was an audience favourite.
For the first time in the history of Topstars, there was a tie for first place in the semi-finals. The winners were Mahadi Tsokolibane of Shoprite Marks Park and Shadrak Mabuza of Shoprite White River.
