Indian dance fusion brings ‘frolicking fun’
JOBURG - Dance company Jazzy Masala's Badtamasti is set to dazzle audiences with a fusion of classical Indian, contemporary, jazz, Latin and hip-hop dance.
The new production follows in the footsteps of last year’s Footprints of a Dancer, which brought together gumboot, gungroo, tap and traditional Indian dance.
“The exhilaration builds around the theme of Masti aur Maza (frolicking fun) in Jozi,” said publicist Collett Dawson.
“Preparations for the new production are underway, with talented dancers working tirelessly to bring the best to stage.”
Dawson said the inspiration for the production lay in the title, Badtamasti.
“Masti [means] having fun with and through dance, and adding a touch of spice to [a] flamboyant, beautiful and rich culture,” she said.
The production, which features a cast of over 80 dancers, will encompass a variety of genres, woven together to create new ways of movement for which choreographer Versha Magan has become legendary.
“Bollywood at its finest, classical kathak as its base; contemporary and jazz, fused together with Latin and hip-hop… Jazzy Masala has become a household name, and aims to bring [audiences] something fresh and creative every year,” said Dawson.
“This production is jam-packed with endless entertainment, great fun, and absolute enjoyment.”
Badtamasti will take place on 6 and 7 September at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, Ormonde, Johannesburg.
