Top MC’s list casues uproar

TWEETBUZZ - Reason calls out MTV Base for not acknowledging local rapper, Okmalumkoolkat, after releasing its list of the Top Ten South Africa’s Hottest MCs.

It would appear both rappers were snubbed.

When MTV Base released the last five names of the top ten South Africa’s Hottest MCs on 19 November, hip-hop fans assumed Sizwe Moeketsi, known best in the music industry as Reason, would be in the top five.

However, when the full list was released on 20 November, it would appear, Reason was eventually placed number six.

This sparked some controversy on twitter among hip-hop fans about the top ten list and only hours later #SAHottestMCs was trending.

When asked for official comment, Reason joked, “It’s only entertaining.”

“Forget me being on that top ten, why is Okmalumkoolkat not on that list. He is one of the hottest and best rappers right now and I feel he deserves to be on the list,” he added.

Rapper, Senzo Mfundo Vilakazi, best known by his stage name Kwesta, said the list was decided on certain criteria and he could not fault them for the final list.

“Someone once told me, when u get into this industry, you should expect three things: hate first, then criticism, and only then compliments,” he said.

“Not saying the list is made to generate hate, but it does critique how well an artist has done. I’m just happy I made it, but obviously everyone wanted to make the number one spot.”

Kwesta said he can only assume that the judges stuck to the criteria when making their decision, and the opinions of fans and the artists had nothing to do with it.

“The top MC’s on my list are, in no particular order, Reason, Keenan, AKA and myself,” he joked.

“Fans of this culture, this movement called hip-hop, will share their opinions and their opinions should be respected.”
