UJ Choir produces new local band
JOBURG - Not just a regular house group, Cookham32 fuses multiple genres in their music and they're bringing it to Joburg.
It was August 2013 when three students – Monde Ndlovu, Perfect Mabaso and Lindokuhle Thabede – of the University of Johannesburg choir played a music session at Thabede’s house in Cookham Road.
Shortly after that, Langelihle Ndlovu and Sibusiso Khoza were added to the band and Cookham32 was formed.
The band wanted their name to be meaningful to them and what better way to pay tribute to the place that brought them together than naming it after the address of Thabede’s house, 32 Cookham Road.
Drawing inspiration from each other, their parents and their faith, the group has managed to perform at stunning venues including The Concrete Jungle rooftop and on etv’s Sunrise morning breakfast show with Penny Lebyane.
When asked what is planned for the band’s future, Khoza said, “We plan on officially entering the market with a bang and a changing the game for the house genre – with a touch of soul and pop.
“We don’t just do typical house music. We fuse a lot of stuff in the process and all we actually want is to give people the same feeling we have when we make the music and perform it – the experience, excitement, sadness, love, etc. It should be an emotional journey.”
The group makes sure that they’re in the right state of mind, body and soul by praying before each performance – a ritual that allows them to give the best performances that they can.
