Matias Aguayo’s live sets captivate Joburg
PARKWOOD – Foreign DJ Matias Aguayo treated his Joburg fans to two nights of performances unlike anything they've ever heard, before jetting off to Cape Town for his next round of shows.
Aguayo, a German-Chilean DJ, visited Joburg recently to perform some live DJ sets at the Goethe-Institut and the popular Joburg hangout, Kitcheners.
Unlike any other DJ’s at the moment, Aguayo takes the term ‘live performance’ quite literally and therefore does not make use of CD’s and vinyl, instead making beats on the spot and using his own voice for overlays.
“My passion for Djing began in the mid ’90s when I played for small parties in Cologne.”
“It became more and more a part of my life, but I was doing music before that already.”
“I have always been doing music, from my childhood. I was very much into recording things and using my four track tape, so basically I’m doing the same thing as when I was nine, but for a lot more people and with better equipment.”
For the first half of the year, Aguayo works on electronic, heavy, underground dance tracks that he hopes will make people want to dance.
“I like music so much because I love to dance – when going out my main interest is to dance as much as possible.”
With his new music he developed his own dance moves, along with a choreographer, which he hopes will catch on as soon at the mixes are released.
“It’s always very challenging as it’s improvised and I’m generating the music in the moment.”
“In the beginning I used to either DJ or perform live, but as I progressed I learned to do them both together – it makes for a better show.”
He also has costumes and dark masks to go along with his new tracks and says he wants to bring the darker, more alternative, music to the people because it makes for a good show and the public find it enjoyable.
