Children’s Theatre puts on Heidi production
PARKTOWN - Johanna Spyri’s classical children’s book Heidi will be brought to life on stage at the National Children’s Theatre during school holidays from 9 March.
Audiences will delightfully follow Heidi’s adventures from the time she arrives in the Swiss Alps to live with her grandfather.
Written in 1881, Heidi is a story of a little orphan girl who brings new hope to everyone her life touches.
Spyri makes us wish we could also go live with grandfather in the Alps, play in the soft green pasture with Peter, drink fresh goat’s milk and eat thick slabs of velvet cheese.
“No child should grow up without having seen Heidi come to life. Its message resonates with all South African children,” says Moira Katz CEO, of the National Children’s Theatre.
“It’s about the power of love, about conquering hardships, and about caring and sharing. It’s about having a positive attitude in spite of adversity. Even though it’s a story about a little Swiss girl who grew up in the Alps a hundred years ago, it’s both timeless and topical.”
Francois Theron, artistic director, injects a touch of magic and large doses of passion in just over an hour’s worth of close-up entertainment.
Perfect for children of all ages, Heidi promises to be a fun-filled adventure with thrills and spills, laughter and a few tears, combining beautiful music – and this is a hallmark of National Children’s Theatre productions.
“After seeing our Heidi, the children will want to go home and read all the Heidi books, and that’s a big part of NCT’s mission – to encourage literacy,” adds Moira.
