Freedom Day ball comes to Ferreirastown

In true South African style, the usually industrial-looking building was decked out in South African flags and colours of the rainbows as arriving guests got a complementary glass of champers and a choice from a stunning range of rainbow masks.

The masked ball was a strictly black dress affair with only the masks and décor forming pops of colour around the tables surrounding the dance floor. However, the main highlight of the evening was the smooth, jazzy sounds of the Blue Notes Swing Band and their vocalist. They got the crowd up and dancing the night away. The band played the entire evening and led in Freedom Day with a fabulous performance of the national anthem.

The host for the night Michael Canfield said, “Nobody’s doing this right now. It’s a pity it’s not packed.” And what a pity it was because those who were in attendance were treated to everything from Recycle Nation, who recycle old Coca-Cola bottles to create comfortable, environmentally-friendly ottomans to decadent artisanal food prepared by a variety of food stalls that surrounded the dance floor, most of whom are regulars at the Market Shed.

There were hidden surprise cupcakes from Crumb & Crust, flame-grilled chorizos from Tico Tico and burgers and sandwiches from Cadillac Jack’s Roadhouse, all of who trade regularly at The Sheds.

The Rainbow Freedom Ball is one of many incredible, unifying events that are happening in Johannesburg in a bid to highlight the rejuvenation of the City. Shaun Defreitas from Cadillac Jack’s Roadhouse said. “It’s amazing. Since the Neighbourgoods market and a few other markets have opened, a lot more people are flocking to the City… but if they can do it all over the City, in each corner, great! Love the idea!”
