Let’s get it on with Lloyd Cele
BRAAMFONTEIN - South African Idols 2010 runner-up, Lloyd Cele, put his all into his performance of Marvin Gaye's greatest hits on the opening night of Let's Get It On, at the Joburg Theatre.
Lloyd Cele took the opportunity to pay tribute to the late Marvin Gaye and ran with it, allowing him to show the audiences at Joburg Theatre that his talent has indeed transcended the boundaries of the South African Idols stage.
The task of performing covers of Gaye’s music is certainly not a small one, but despite the pressure of doing some of the world’s favourite love songs justice, Cele certainly did not take the job lightly.
The Make It Easy singer definitely made the night easy to enjoy, with the audience frequently applauding and singing along – visibly impressed by the performance.
The majority of the songs that were performed were in collaboration with Australian-Tonga vocalist, Vika Bull.
It was obvious that the audience thoroughly enjoyed duets, even more so than the two songs that each singer performed solo.
According to the star-studded audience, it was the story of Gaye’s life that was explained between songs which was the best part of the evening.
Each song took the audience back to when it was released, allowing them to reminisce, but also giving them new insight into what was going on in the life of Gaye at that time.
Many people were shocked at the events that took place in the life of the star – especially during the description of the instant that Gaye was shot by his father.
The show, produced by Simon Myers and Moira Bennett of Room 8 Productions, featured all time favourite songs such as You’re All I Need To Get By, Let’s Get It On and Sexual Healing, at the discretion of musical director, John McAll.
An enjoyable time was had by all, with a number of audience members highly recommending the show once it had ended.
