Don’t miss these EuropeFest events

JOBURG – Local art lovers are being treated to a month-long feast of European culture as the highly-anticipated EuropeFest 2015 comes to town.

 

This year’s EuropeFest will celebrate the 56th anniversary of the European Union, and it has already seen EU Member State embassies in South Africa gather a large number of cultural events under a single, marvellous umbrella.

Although EuropeFest has been underway for a few weeks and ends at the end of May, there are still a number of exciting, culturally diverse events to check out:

 

Art lovers should head on down to the Renzo Vignali Artistic Foundry, the oldest in South Africa, as it will be hosting two open days at its premises in Pretoria North. Check out the live bronze casting, mould making and wax preparation and a number of works by Italian-South African sculptor Edoardo Villa. The open days are on the 23 to 24 May from 9am to 3pm. Entrance is free. Find the Foundry at 379 Koos de la Rey Street, Pretoria North.

Music lovers will want to see the Slovak-Hungarian duo, violinist Sándor Jávorkai and guitarist Miriam Rodriguez Brüllová perform an incredible concert, Violin and Guitar Romance at Pretoria’s Brooklyn Theatre on 24 May at 3pm. They will return to the venue for a performance, Fiesta Strings, with Czech violoncello player Petr Nouzovsky on 28 May at 8pm.

She comes from Barcelona and her Americana roots have fans flocking to get tickets to her gigs. Joanna Serrat, rising Spanish singer/songwriter will perform at the Bassline in Joburg on 29 May.

The European Film Festival ran until 17 May at Cinema Nouveau theatres throughout Johannesburg. Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are screening recent releases that have received acclaim and accolades.

Films on offer included Ida, Poland’s 2015 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film, as well as Three Hearts from acclaimed French director Benoît Jacquot, and Two Days, One Night from Belgium’s Dardenne brothers.
