Heuning brings sweet dreams
JOBURG - Heuning (Honey), the Afrikaans-country musical duo comprising Henk Derckson and Jeanette Rootman, is taking their listeners into their world and allowing them to dream with their new album, Drome (Dreams).
The two songbirds, who are not romantically linked, have been making beautiful music together since the release of their debut album Heuning in 2012, but began their individual musical journies some time before that.
The duo came together as the musical brainchild of David Gresham Records which was looking for something different in Afrikaans music.
“We wanted to bring something new to Afrikaans-country music – something in Afrikaans with a Lady Antebellum effect. Not a copy of it, but just something with the same kind of feel – a modern country feel,” explained Derckson, the duo’s male lead.
It was initially Rootman who was chosen by the record company to form part of the band, and she suggested Derckson for the position of male vocalist while he was only in Grade 12.
Drome is their second album, and the duo has five singles currently on high rotation on different radio stations.
With their country-style music, they have managed to appeal to both the Afrikaans and English markets – with their English-speaking fans even appealing to them to start making music in English too.
Heuning is not only excited about their upcoming tours and show dates in the country, but also for their tour to California during which they will perform with Pittsburgh’s hottest new country band called Stampede.
When asked which one of their songs they would like their fans to listen to for the rest of their lives, the duo had a hard time choosing just one song and explained that they are excited and confident about the album as a whole.
