Voices of Joburg – A street violinist (WATCH)
JOBURG - Perched on the corner of Juta Street outside Doubleshot Coffee & Tea is a young man decked out in a heavy jumper and hat, playing a violin.
Contrary to his appearances, Arthur Seeme says he’s not in it for the tips.
He claims it took him over five years to learn how to play the violin, and he’s been playing, in total, for eight years.
He also happens to have one of the best spots in the city. Sitting on a barstool outside a popular coffee shop, which happens to be on the Red Bus City Tour’s route, and is in the heart of one of the City’s most student populated areas.

When asked why he plays, his answer came as a small surprise. “To inspire our people, to make them aware that anything is possible. The violin is a technical instrument, but anyone can do it.”
He claimed that many up-and-coming artists don’t want to learn to play the violin because they say it’s too difficult. “I’m trying to send a message here on the street. To be inspired, to encourage them and to make contacts. Anyone who wants information about the violin – I can deliver the information.”
While Arthur can usually be found in his normal spot, occasionally he is asked to play at other venues, including the Market Theatre and trendy student spots around town. He enjoys playing what he calls romantic sounds to the tourists and city dwellers who stop by.
