VOICES OF JOBURG – An unfortunate experience in Braamfontein
BRAAMFONTEIN - Braamfontein is a place known to most of its visitors as one of excitement, but to others it is a place of terror.
City Buzz met an ex-Wits University student who recently suffered a traumatic experience in the place where she found herself spending most of her time.
With a number of family members that live near the city, this beautiful and friendly face was always out and about in Braamfontein. She frequents the Neighbourgoods Market and usually walks the trendy rejuvenated precinct with her friends from university or family members to get food, books or just to have a good time at one of the many bustling nightlife spots.
On 27 November, she found herself in Braamfontein once again, during which time she fell victim to a common, but scary, crime in the area.
“I went to the ATM to draw some cash and then two guys came up to me on either side and they shouted at me to give them my bank card and my pin,” she recalled.
“I didn’t even want to turn and look at what they were threatening me with. I just gave them my pin and ran to my car and cried,” she said.
“They drew R700 from my account!”
She said she never wants to go to Braamfontein again after her ordeal.
She thought it might be due to the festive season approaching and urges everyone in the city to be extra careful during this period. Walking around the city in large groups is usually a better option than walking alone.
When going to the city, it is also safer to draw money during the day at a safe ATM near home, before going into the city.
Braamfontein is a lively neighbourhood and tragic incidents can be prevented if one takes the correct precautions.
