Voices of Joburg: Expression in the city

JOBURG - Usually, City Buzz has good luck when it comes to running into interesting characters in the city, and while most seek to have an opinion with their name attached to it, some people have wise words but prefer to remain anonymous.

As we took to the streets of Joburg CBD recently, we were intrigued by the interesting words of a man in a red shirt. “Joburg is going to be taken over by race issues – just like the rest of the country at the moment,” the man said to his friend.

Wanting to hear his views on the current racial issues, City Buzz asked the man, “Why do you think that’ll happen?”

“It’s the way the country is moving at the moment,” he said.

“South Africans have this mob mentality and tend to jump on the trends with everyone else. I was born a long time before the born-free generation and not even I harbour as much hatred as they do. Why do the born-free kids have a problem with everything?”

City Buzz asked the man if he’d ever expressed his views on social media or written a blog. “No, that’s not for me because all that would do is talk to the same people who have it set in their minds to oppose everything that they take in from the government, their parents and on these networking apps.”

“Don’t you think voicing your opinion would get people to maybe listen to what you have to say? Don’t you think your voice has the power to sway the people?” City Buzz asked the man.

“I’m not trying to become the next Jacob Zuma, Nelson Mandela or Gandhi. I’m not the kind of person who needs everyone to know what I’m thinking. Leave me to my opinion and I’ll leave you to yours,” he said.

Although it seems that not everyone is trying to make changes on a public scale or wants their opinions heard, these are wise words we could all heed.
