Meet a woman of many talents
JOHANNESBURG – See who designs sets for your favourite local musicians
Graphic designer, performer, dancer and vocalist – this Joburg North beauty is taking her talent to new heights.
Born in Tembisa and raised in Soweto, Manthe Ribane has made a local and international place for herself in the entertainment industry and all because of her mom and dad.
“It all started, thankfully, with my parents who took us to art galleries at a young age, and to graphic design workshops. They set up a very strong narrative for us growing up because they saw which part of our life journey we were most interested in,” she said.
Ribane, along with her siblings, own a creative business called 113 Studios, which takes on any job within the arts sphere.
The creative collective, which is currently run from their family home, has designed a set and the conceptual styling for Mafikizolo’s Nhlanhla Nciza, who signed her younger brother to her record label.
The group also did some design work for Between 10and5, the publishing company that serves as an online showcase of the best that the South African creative industry has to offer across a broad range of categories – one of their biggest projects to date.
This woman of many talents is no stranger to being behind the scenes, but also in front of the camera, as an international vocalist!
Back from a European tour in January, the creative explained that the people took to her sound so well that she released her music there and plans to keep her music on an international platform rather than a local one – for now.
She described her sound as alternative, but plans to transcend the current boundaries of her music and find something new. “Anything that is alternative and new – I’m more in tune to that,” she said.
She doesn’t like to say much about her career in music and would prefer that people keep a look-out for her stuff in the future – but having performed for Nelson Mandela at the FNB Stadium, we’re hoping that we get to hear her sound soon.
