The Beyhives response to #Lemonade

JOHANNESBURG – On 23 April, singer Beyonce dropped a new album, Lemonade, a spectacular visual album which is littered with hints that her husband, famous rapper Jay Z, may have cheated on her.

The visual album is a series of clips, featuring Beyonce and a number of other high-profile black women, including one of the Williams sisters, connected by a voiceover where Beyonce reads poetry and makes bold statements such as ‘Are you cheating on me?’

What’s incredible is that she managed to create the entire album in secret. Although she hinted to her fans via her Instagram account that something was on its way (after the success of her track, Formation), no one expected such an intense, dark project from the star.

The album follows the story of infidelity and reconciliation, with a number of songs made into ‘chapters’, each with its own title, such as Intuition, Denial, Apathy, Emptiness and Resurrection. It seems to drop some major bombs and even calls out the women that Jay Z may or may not have been unfaithful with – aka ‘Becky with the good hair’. She also makes some important points about gender inequality among black women in America.

Fans of Beyonce went absolutely nuts on Twitter after the album dropped, with speculation about its meaning running wild. Some have even pledged their support to the star, while many have hinted that they are simply waiting for Beyonce to file divorce papers.

Although there is some speculation that the album is based on the turbulent relationship between Beyonce’s parents, there’s no denying that the music and lyrics are incredibly insightful and relatable. Everyone will be keeping their eyes on Beyonce to see what happens next … making her a very clever music star.
