The city is the best place to meet the up-and-coming entertainers of the country.
In Newtown, City Buzz found young blogger, Lehlohonolo Moloi, who’s blog is called Child of Coco.
The name of his blog, he explained, came about after his mother called him a coconut (a colloquialism meaning that he has the mannerisms of a white person, in the body of a black person) and after years of being called a snob. He decided that this wasn’t a bad thing and that, in fact, there were a lot of coconuts such as himself who are interested in similar things.
“I’ve done about 14 articles. I’ve interviewed Sthembisa Mngadi [stylist], who was voted one of GQ’s top-10 best dressed in 2010; I’ve interviewed people like Jake Singer, who is a fine artist,” he said.
“I’ll be doing an interview with Urban Zulu.”
This young gun, fresh out of high school, has a unique perspective from which he views the people who he interviews. “My blog is very spiritual. I believe that everyone who is on it, and who I’ve interviewed, is a god. People focus more on the message rather than who sent the message. So God is busy, but you always know that He’s there – you can recognise his work.
“In the same way that the people I interview have influenced whatever industry that they’re in, in a really big way – like Jake Singer, who is a really big inspiration for me.”
While taking a look into the world of art is one of his passions, he also focuses on interviewing people and tackling topics of politics in South Africa.
More than either of those focus points, however, this upcoming blogger is most passionate about learning about people who have not yet been discovered and are on the rise.
