Q&A with The Voice SA runner-up

ROSEBANK – After almost winning The Voice SA Season 1, Gavin Edwards is not slowing down on doing what he loves.

Gavin Edwards, runner-up on The Voice SA, talks about his life on the show, what happened after the show and what he’ll be doing, heading into Christmas.

Since turning heads on the first season of the South African spin-off of the international music show, Edwards has gained momentum in the music industry and is ready to take it head-on, gigging all over the city and making new music.

Q What did it feel like to be The Voice SA Season 1 runner-up?

A It felt absolutely amazing and was a proud moment to stand in the finale; it still feels mad to think that a year ago this time it all started. What a journey!

Q What was the culture like on set?

A On set it was very professional, from the crew to the talent to the coaches – everyone took this season very seriously. There were so many dreams that were all the same – just to sing – and everyone, every day was always positive, which I loved because I try to stay positive about everything.

Q What were you doing before The Voice?

A I was playing cover gigs; just me and my guitar at restaurants and pubs – well anywhere and everywhere. I [had been] playing cover gigs for 21 years at that stage.

Q Why did you enter?

A Three months before The Voice I was close to quitting music forever, but from watching the US version of The Voice I knew it was something I had to go for.

Q What is your life like now?

A It is nothing like it used to be career-wise. So many doors have opened. I signed to Universal Records, recorded and released my debut album and I tour all over SA. It’s life-changing.

Q What are you working on?

A My goal is to get my album to platinum status, which is 30 000 albums sold.

Q What can we expect from you next year?

A In January, I’m taking the family on a vacation as it’s been a long year, then it’s back to promoting my album and touring. There’s going to be a lot of gigs and music coming out next year.

Q What are your Christmas and New Year’s Eve plans?

A For Christmas I’ll be with the family and playing shows around the December period and for New Year I will be doing a gig as well.
