Battle of the potjie raises funds

Blazing fires, decorated tables and cooking of delicious potjies were the order of the day at the annual potjie competition held at Norscot Manor Recreation Centre on 2 July.

The competition was a creative way to raise funds for Norscot Playschool based at the recreational centre and a great way to bring parents together to socialise and unite as a team.

This year’s competition had eight entries comprising three community contestants and five playschool parents.

The judges of the competition were father and daughter Gavin and Pharyn Clunnie, Steve Orchard, and Fourways Review reporter, Masego Seemela.

The contestants were tasked with cooking their potjie on a fire, and creating a decorated table to complement a unique dish.

After all the judging was done, the winner was playschool parent, Francois Opperman; in second place was community member, Simone Denbury; and in third place was one of the playschool teachers, Mandy Bouwer.

“The funds raised at such events go directly back into community outreach initiatives as we try to aid the less fortunate in the area. Some of the funds are also used to repair or replace playground equipment and upgrades, or maintenance at the school,” said the school’s Mandy Mair.

“The hope for the potjie competition is to grow into an event that the community will diarise for many years to come.”
