Sikho ‘Sequence’ Nqothole gears up for title defence
BRYANSTON – Local junior bantamweight boxer must fight to keep his pan Africa title.
Bryanston’s Sikho ‘Sequence’ Nqothole must fight to defend his continental boxing title against SA’s top-ranked boxer in their weight division.
Nqothole (24) has risen to stardom quickly following 11 wins from 11 professional fights in the first two years of his career.
Climbing the ranks so fast can put pressure on a young boxer.
But with seven knockout wins and no draws or loses to his name, Nqothole unquestionably deserves the World Boxing Association pan African junior bantamweight title, which is in his possession.
But now he must fight SA’s top-ranked junior bantamweight boxer, Sabelo Nyebiyane, at the Royal Swazi Spar in Swaziland on 2 November.
This will be at the Setanta Sports Promotion in conjunction with Fox Sports Africa event.
Despite the fight’s tremendous significance, Nqothole and coach Alan Toweel see it as a stepping stone to greater things.
“Sikho is undefeated in his career and if he defends his title a few more times we can go for the [World Boxing Association] international titles,” Toweel said.
He explained that Nqothole’s daily training routine includes sparring, running, and conditioning.
Nqothole would not divulge the strategy he would employ against Nyebiyane, but said he was ‘going there to break him down’.
“I want to keep my title and I can go 12 rounds if I need to,” he said.
“It will also be interesting for me because I have never fought a southpaw [left-handed and left-stanced boxer] before.”
Nqothole expects the fight to be tough but relishes the challenge.
The fight will be broadcast on TV on the Fox Sports Africa 2 channel.
