Crawford learner donates calculators to seven schools in need

Crawford College Sandton Grade 11 learner Tristan Strike donated calculators to seven schools in dire need.

Crawford College Sandton learner Tristan Strike recently donated 1 000 scientific calculators to seven underprivileged schools.

While participating in the school’s peer-to-peer tutoring programme with Fidelitas Comprehensive School in Diepkloof, Tristan noticed the disparity in results between the Grade 8 learners who have calculators and those who do not. “He began searching for a way to rectify this problem. [He] found that locally produced calculators to be overpriced and needed to find a cheaper alternative,” said Crawford head of marketing and administration Nadia Cooke.

Tristan subsequently found a factory in China that manufactures reasonably priced, quality scientific calculators and came to an agreement with the factory for the production of 1 000 calculators.

Together with his father Tony, Tristan was able to donate calculators to seven schools, which included Crawford’s partner school Fidelitas. Principal Tebogo Makhoti was present to receive the donation for Fidelitas.

Crawford Sandton executive principal Morag Rees and college principal Tracey Purkiss commended the Grade 11 learner for his generosity and commitment to the community.
