OPINION: Reflecting on 2020

Covid-19 hit and for the first time in my life I was truly scared of what was to come. But the show had to go on and it was like something out of a movie.

Sandton Chronicle journalist Aneesa Adams writes:

The year 2020 started out as something like a dream.
The sun was shining, birds were singing and hope was in the air until the whole world turned into a nightmare nobody could wake up from.

Covid-19 hit and for the first time in my life I was truly scared of what was to come. But the show had to go on and it was like something out of a movie.

As the newsroom prepared for ‘battle’ inspiring words from Mel Gibson’s Braveheart were ringing in my head. I was ready to take on the task of surviving 2020.

With much support from our colleagues and editors, we received our permits as essential workers and just like that we were part of history. Working as a team, the aim was to get the paper to the community and we did just that. We survived.

Lessons learnt from 2020 are too many to count. But what I can say is that South Africans demonstrated the true spirit of ubuntu in these trying times. My hope for 2021 is that this changed behaviour continues for years to come, for the country to heal from wounds of the past and scars from the coronavirus pandemic.

May this new year bring the community more light and love. Stay home, stay safe and support your local newspaper.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
