Local shopping app scoops Innovator of the year award
SANDTON – Thanks to Microsoft, the homegrown app will reach 140 countries worldwide.
An app that enables shoppers to buy without hassles scooped Innovator of the Year award and the Brand SA Play Your Part Awards.
Co-founder of the Q-Hop App with offices based in Sandown, Sandton, Ajay Lalu, said he and co-founder Sanjay Soni had essentially created a contactless, cashless retail checkout solution in 2019.
Lalu explained, “Picture this: You walk into a shop, you open up an app on your mobile phone, you scan the barcodes of everything you want to buy. It can give you dynamic promotions based on your past purchasing history and, once you’re ready to check out, you take your items, put them onto an ‘internet of things’ scale and we validate what’s physically there versus what you have scanned.
“Once we validate it, we allow you to pay using any digital payment platform from Mastercard to bitcoin to PayPal. Once you’ve paid, you may pack your goods and leave the store. So, it’s quick efficient and hyper-personalised.”
He added that the app is retailer dependent. Their first South African retailer was SPAR and they hoped others would join in. Lalu added that they had entered a global strategic alliance with Microsoft and their solutions would be sold in over 140 countries by Microsoft sales teams.
