Varsity College Sandton hosted 28 of the regional ‘quizpert’ winners for the second round of the IIE Varsity College National High Schools Quiz in Benmore on June 19.
This was to determine the top three most inquisitive learners from Gauteng who will join five other participants in the grand finals, to be held in Durban on July 6.
In this round, there were 62 questions spread over six categories: geography, history, science, sport, entertainment, and current affairs. The three participants who emerged victorious were Talia Govender (Crawford Pretoria), Bukhobenkosi Mchophele (Noordwyk Secondary) and Josh January (Alberton High).VC Sandton PR and events coordinator Anto Kagisho said, “There are the three top students from Gauteng, one in Gqeberha, another from Cape Town, and three more coming from the Durban campuses. The overall prize is R10 000 for the learner and R10 000 for the respective school that the learner comes from, R5 000 for the teacher, coach, or parent who helped the learner get that far in the competition and R2 500 for the runner-up.
“We’re hoping that one of the learners from our Gauteng region can be the winner, that will be amazing. Last year’s winner was from Pietermaritzburg. We’re hoping our region has one who makes it to either runner-up or first place.”
