The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton, on October 17, hosted a significant event in collaboration with the Campus Gentlemen’s Club, aimed at raising awareness about the mental health challenges that affect men.

With startling statistics revealing that men commit suicide at the highest rates, the event sought to encourage open discussions about mental well-being and the societal pressures that can lead to tragic outcomes.

The discussion featured two prominent speakers, Siboniso Gaxa, a former professional footballer, and Dr John Hunter, a respected lecturer.

Gaxa, who played at the highest level, knows firsthand the unique challenges that come with being in the public eye.

During his talk, he shared his experiences navigating social pressures and the expectations placed on him as a professional athlete.

“There’s an expectation for men to be strong and stoic, but the reality is that we face immense pressure.”

He added that during his career, he struggled with anxiety and depression, especially after his serious injury.

“It’s crucial for men to understand that it’s okay to feel vulnerable.”

Gaxa’s story resonated with many, as he described the journey of returning to school after achieving success in football.

The transition was not easy, and he found himself grappling with feelings of inadequacy and doubt.

“I had to learn that seeking help was a sign of strength, not weakness,” he emphasised.

His message was clear: Men need to break the stigma surrounding mental health and recognise that asking for help is not a sign of failure.

“Crying is not a weakness, it is an expression of what you are going through. We need to allow ourselves that vulnerability,” Gaxa added.

Hunter discussed the prevalent issues of stress, anxiety, and depression among men, urging attendees to prioritise their mental well-being.

“Men often feel they must shoulder their burdens alone, but it is important to acknowledge that these feelings are common and treatable,” Hunter explained.

He highlighted the need for men to seek professional help, emphasising that therapists can provide valuable tools and strategies for managing mental health challenges.

“It is perfectly acceptable for men to go to therapy and express their feelings. We need to create an environment where men feel safe to discuss their mental health without fear of judgment.”

The event facilitated an open dialogue among attendees, who were encouraged to ask questions and share their thoughts.

It became a safe space for men to discuss topics that are often shrouded in silence.

Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with such pressing issues, and many remarked on the importance of creating more platforms for these conversations.

As the event concluded, the message was clear: Mental health is an essential aspect of overall well-being, and it should be prioritised in discussions surrounding masculinity.

The stories shared by Gaxa and the insights provided by Hunter serve as a reminder that men are not alone in their struggles.

They are encouraged to reach out for help, to talk about their feelings, and to recognise that vulnerability is part of being human.
