Watch: Truck crashes into Rivonia complex – resident talks about terrifying incident

"We were having lunch and we heard this crashing, huge, disturbing sound... it sounded as if the building next door had collapsed..."

An incident shook the community at The Homestead complex in Rivonia at around 12:15, with residents reporting they heard a massive crash, assuming the building next door had collapsed.

However, it was a truck that crashed into the wall of the complex on November 21. Three vehicles parked inside the complex have been damaged, and the water and electricity supply have also gone down.

Sandton Chronicle journalist Duduzile Khumalo visited the complex and spoke to some of the witnesses.
A resident Namritha Sivsanker said, “We were having lunch and we heard this crashing, huge, disturbing sound… it sounded as if the building next door had collapsed… we just dived out of our seats to the door to find out what was happening. We just saw a huge cloud of smoke.

“When we walked down to the refuse area and saw this truck, there with no driver, so initially we thought he may be dead. We noticed the truck had come speeding down our short road and crashed into the wall… everybody is just so shaken up.”

Police are on the scene, although it was reported that it took several phone calls to get them there. They also contacted the Community Police Forum which was a great help, said Sivsanker. JMPD’s spokesperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla said, “We are getting officers to attend the scene. If they are not there already, I’m waiting for feedback.”
