Tatami Judo has a passion for silver and gold

From Tshwane to Angola, Tatami judoka brought home medals, experience, and pride, a reflection of discipline, teamwork, and world-class coaching.

July was nothing short of remarkable for Tatami Judo.

From school-level tournaments to international mats, the Bryanston-based club proved once again why it is considered a powerhouse in South African judo.

Throughout five major competitions, Tatami’s judoka collected an impressive 24 medals, a reflection not only of their skill but also of the hours of training and commitment behind each performance.

At the National Schools competition in Tshwane, the club’s juniors shone brightly, with 11 entries bringing home six golds and a silver medal.

It was a moment that underlined Tatami’s strength in nurturing young talent. The momentum carried into the SA Open, also held in Tshwane, where Tatami added two golds, two silvers, and a bronze to its growing tally.

Team spirit came to the fore at the SA Open Teams event, where all nine Tatami entries medalled, six golds and three silvers, showcasing the club’s depth that extends beyond individual brilliance.

The SA Kata competition tested precision and discipline, with all four Tatami entrants narrowly missing the podium with strong fourth-place finishes.

Beyond national borders, the club’s judoka continued to make their mark. At the African Cup in Tshwane, three athletes returned with one gold and one bronze, while another gained invaluable experience at the Africa Open in Angola.

Tatami also celebrated a bronze medal at the Region 5 Youth Games, proving that its reach and competitiveness extend well into the international arena.

“This month has been a whirlwind of achievement,” said one of the coaches.

“Our athletes trained up to five times a week leading into the tournaments. What sets them apart is not only their talent but also their discipline and passion for judo.”

Operating out of the Hobart Centre in Bryanston, Tatami Judo runs classes for children as young as five right through to seniors.

With equal focus on competitive success and personal growth, the club is building champions who excel both on the mat and

beyond it.
