Johannesburg Water confirms service restoration
After emergency pipeline repairs in Hurlingham, parts of Sandown, Morningside, and surrounding areas are seeing the gradual return of water.
Residents across Sandton faced water supply interruptions as Johannesburg Water (JW) teams worked to repair damage caused by a sinkhole at the corner of Winnie Mandela Drive and Argyle Avenue in Hurlingham.

The sinkhole, which appeared earlier, forced the closure of southbound lanes on Winnie Mandela Drive, and exposed a 375mm steel pipeline beneath the road. JW, assisted by Johannesburg Roads Agency, began excavation to stabilise the area and carry out urgent pipeline repairs.

Nombuso Shabalala, JW spokesperson, said: “Repairs to the pipeline at the corner of Winnie Mandela Drive and Argyle Avenue in Hurlingham were completed early this morning (August 21) after contractors worked overnight.” Following the repairs, JW confirmed the gradual restoration of water supply, refilling the Illovo reservoir and Illovo tower on August 21.
Shabalala pointed out that the water system is now undergoing recharging protocols, with the Illovo reservoir reopened to 50% capacity and the Illovo tower at 10% as the refill process continues. “JW will continue to monitor throughout the day to ensure stability.”
