Johannesburg Water (JW) was contacted on January 24 with an enquiry about the strong smell of sewage near the 4km parkrun marker in Riverside Park in Bryanston east.
At first, the assumption was that the smell was a result of a sewage leak that raised concerns over the safety and wellbeing of parkrunning families with their children and pets who use the area weekly for fitness.
JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala responded on February 2 with information on the cause of prickled noses in the area.
“Johannesburg Water sent a team to investigate the matter and found that it is not a sewer leak but is a valve leak,” Shabalala rectified. “Furthermore, this case was not found on Johannesburg Water’s SAP system, meaning that it was not recorded. Therefore, the entity was not aware of the leak because it was not reported.”

Shabalala emphasized the importance of community members coming forward with information, and logging issues on behalf of the community.
“The entity relies heavily on communities to report service delivery issues. This is why Johannesburg Water consistently encourages residents and customers to log calls, using the various channels available, for service delivery issues such as leaking water pipes, pipe bursts, and sewage leakages.”
The following information needs to be provided when logging calls: what the issue is, the exact physical address and nearest corner, suburb name, and contact number (if the issue is on the customer’s property). Customers can log calls using the following Johannesburg Water platforms:
