Rosewalk Gardens’ fire safety measure leak fixed by JW
After nearly two months of persistent reporting, Johannesburg Water resolved a significant leak outside the Rosewalk Gardens complex, even though it was on a pipe that didn't belong to them.
Residents of Rosewalk Gardens, located on Rosewalk Street, Hurl Park, in Sandton, can finally breathe a sigh of relief following the long-awaited repair of a water leak that had been a growing concern for nearly two months.
The leak, which had been reported to Johannesburg Water (JW) on 17 separate occasions since February 22, presented serious risks, particularly relating to fire safety as it affected the connection to the complex’s fire hoses.
Gill Witz, a resident of Rosewalk Gardens, expressed the community’s frustration over the delay in addressing the issue. “We were genuinely worried that if a fire broke out, we wouldn’t have the means to extinguish it due to the ongoing leak. We reported it repeatedly, but it took far too long for any action to be taken.”

In response to the continuous complaints, JW conducted an investigation and confirmed that the leak stemmed from an old steel pipe located beneath the pavement, which, while not part of their active water supply network, posed a risk to residents.
JW took the initiative to repair the damage, despite the ownership of the pipe being unclear.
JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said: “We recognised the concerns raised by the residents and appreciate their patience as we worked to resolve this issue.

“Although this particular steel pipe did not belong to our operational lines, and posed no interruption to our municipal water supply, we chose to intervene in the interest of public service to prevent any further disruption.”
After extensive repairs, conducted on April 11, the leak was finally secured, alleviating the residents’ fears and restoring confidence in the presence of adequate fire safety measures.
