Rosehaven Retirement Village residents bring Joseph to life

Creativity and faith shine on stage as retirement village residents perform an abridged Joseph production, proving life doesn’t slow down with age.

At Rosehaven Retirement Village, residents are preparing to tell the story of Joseph in a special half-hour production, combining music, narrative, and biblical lessons.

Ian Blackstock, a resident and the show’s narrator, knows the story well.

He performed as narrator in school productions decades ago and has now adapted the original script to suit the village cast.

“We selected the key songs, turned the rest into narrative, and reduced it to 30 minutes so it’s enjoyable and manageable for everyone,” he said.

The cast includes residents and staff, featuring three brothers, a choir of three ladies, and a pianist.

For two of the major numbers, the Jacob and Sons and Pharaoh songs, they are using original backing tracks from the Donny Osmond production, while all other music is led by pianist Anabel Lawrence.

The production also emphasises the biblical story; Joseph’s journey from sold slave to second-in-command in Egypt, showing God’s hand in saving his family and the people of Israel.

“We make it clear that God was guiding Joseph, giving him success, and using him to save lives,” explained Blackstock.

Simon Eccles, Rosehaven manager, added that the production has benefits beyond the stage.

“It keeps residents active, encourages them to try new things, and strengthens our community. Everyone brings their talents and skills to make it special.”

The performance is set for November 12 at 14:00 and is open exclusively to Rosehaven residents.

For Blackstock, the experience has been rewarding.

“I was nervous at first, but rehearsals have been a joy. It’s amazing to see everyone contributing and stepping into roles they never imagined.”
