Chef D brings township flavours and childhood memories to Sandton
Locals are invited to come and enjoy kasi-flavoured dishes made by Chef D at the Wakanda Village Sandton Market.
Dalene Sylvester, known as Chef D, said food has always been part of how she understands love.
“I grew up in a home where food was the love language.” Chef D describes herself as a dynamic woman, a go-getter, and someone who is enthusiastic about life. Her energy shows in the way she talks about food and the memories tied to it.

Although she started in the corporate world, cooking slowly became more than a hobby. Sylvester recalls baking cookies and selling them on the bus. That small hustle helped her realise she could make a living from food.
“That is what pushed me into my food journey.” Her background plays a big role in how she cooks. Raised by a grandmother, Chef D grew up eating food rich in spice, flavour, and tradition. Over the years, she has explored different styles of cooking, but she always returns to food that feels familiar and honest.
Now based in Sandton at the Wakanda Village- Sandton Market under the Kasi Kombuis store, many of the dishes she serves are inspired by childhood memories. She speaks fondly of Sundays at home, where meals such as the well-known seven colours were common.

“It reminds me of being a little girl and feeling loved through food.” Chef D believes there is a big misunderstanding about kasi food, as many people think it is unhealthy or greasy, but she strongly disagrees. “We were healthier growing up than people today. Kasi food is soul food. It is cooked with love, and you can taste it.”
As her career has grown, her cooking style has also changed. She now focuses on food that is both tasty and mindful, as more people are aware of what they eat.
“It’s about food that is healthy but still enjoyable.”
Chef D explained that she is inspired by South African women chefs such as Lorna Maseko and Siba Mtongana, who have shown confidence, skill, and authenticity in a tough industry.
