JRA starts work on Illovo sinkhole

The sinkhole in Chaplin Street is partly closed off as JRA investigates the damage.

A sinkhole has opened in the middle of Chaplin Street in Illovo, causing concern for residents and motorists who use the road every day.

The sinkhole was reported to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) on February 5, and Sandton Chronicle sent them questions regarding the cause on February 11.

While we have yet to receive comment from JRA, a team did visit the site on February 17. They closed off the area before excavating the site in order to investigate the problem. A team member at the scene said the sinkhole may have been caused by a damaged pipe underneath the road, however, this has not yet been officially confirmed.

We have followed up with JRA and expect an official update on the cause of the sinkhole and the steps that will be taken to fix it soon. It will be published as soon as it is received.
