Burst pipe floods Wendywood home, resident slams delayed response

A Wendywood homeowner says knee-high water flooded his house after a burst pipe on his street ran for nearly two hours before being shut off.

A Wendywood resident is counting the cost after a burst municipal pipe sent water rushing into his home on February 21, leaving parts of the house submerged up to knee height.

The pipe reportedly burst at around 07:32. According to the homeowner, the fault was immediately reported to Johannesburg Water. “They said they would attend to it, but the water just kept coming. By the time they arrived, my house was already flooded.”

Residents say officials only arrived at approximately 09:00, with the water supply shut off at around 09:21. By then, large volumes of water had flowed down the street, pooling in driveways and spilling into properties.

The resident added that this is not the first time the street has experienced infrastructure failures. Neighbours say at least two other burst pipes have occurred in the same area in recent months, raising concerns about the condition of underground infrastructure.

The affected homeowner says he is now uncertain how to proceed with the water damage inside his house and car. “I don’t even know where to start. The floors, the furniture, everything is soaked.”

Questions remain over response times, recurring pipe bursts in the area, and what recourse residents have when municipal infrastructure failures result in private property damage.

We sent Johannesburg Water questions regarding the cause of the burst pipe and whether affected residents can claim damages. We will publish their reply as soon as we receive it.
