Neglect at Outspan Bird Sanctuary leaves residents frustrated
After more than six months of appeals, partial grass cutting at the Morningside park has raised fresh concerns about the city’s maintenance plans.
Residents say years of neglect have left Outspan Bird Sanctuary in a worsening state, with overgrown grass, rodents, and erosion turning what should be a community haven into a source of frustration.
Daphne Schwab, a resident and member of the Ward 103 Community Forum, said it took more than six months of repeated requests before Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo sent a team to cut the grass at the sanctuary on Marikana Crescent. “It has taken us over six months of begging and pleading for City Parks to cut the grass in our park. Last week, a couple of people came to make a start on almost two-metre-high weeds and debris brought down by excessive rains, but the job has been very poorly carried out.”

She said workers used weed eaters to clear sections of the dense growth, but left behind piles of cut grass and debris. “Will they come back and complete the cutting, and will we have to wait every time for over six months before anyone hears our pleas?”

Residents reported an increase in rats and snakes in the area, with baby tortoises also navigating through the overgrowth.

Schwab said that, for three Christmas holidays in a row, residents have been unable to walk their dogs or enjoy the green space due to the long grass. She added that excessive rains have further worsened conditions, causing significant erosion along the storm water outlet and stream running from under Outspan Road into the greenbelt
Community members are now calling for consistent maintenance and a clear plan to restore and protect the sanctuary before further environmental damage occurs.
